Case study - John’s story
“When I first contacted GSERA I felt I had hit rock bottom. I was suffering from ill health, depression and had a drink problem. I knew I needed to change, but I found it hard to see a way out.
GSERA provided the solution to get me kick-started and helped reduce the stress I was feeling with friendly, practical advice.
GSERA encouraged me every step of the way, helping me with my finances and a daily routine of activity – including alarm calls each morning during the week!
I was supported at my own pace, in my own time and I am now proud to be working. I thought I was a lost cause, but the team at GSERA helped prove me wrong.”

Case study - Peter’s Story
“I had over 20 years experience in scaffolding and wanted to get back to work again. I thought this would be impossible as an injury I’d picked up on the job eight years ago made me give up work. I really thought my “disability” -as I saw it - had ruined any chance of getting back to the job I loved. GSERA saw it differently. They paid for me to update my Advanced Scaffolding Qualification and encouraged me to consider using my skills and experience to teach scaffolding to others.
One of my biggest fears was interviews, but with their help I became more and more confident and actually began to feel good about myself again. I was determined to make it back to work.
GSERA helped write my CV and sent it to scaffolding companies throughout Scotland. I soon had an interview with one of them, but lost out to a stronger candidate. The company was impressed though and I was offered another position with them as Scaffolding Trainer with a salary of £22,000!!!
And to think I had all but given up on myself before GSERA helped me get that job!”
GSERA can provide you with a wide range of training to help you get the job you want. You may even be able to get funding and your benefits will not be stopped during your training.
There are new training opportunities arriving every day as the demand from employers grows. GSERA will help you get the qualifications and training for that job. If you are looking to update your computer skills, or you haven’t even used a computer before, why not visit our Learning Base where our friendly staff will be more than happy to recommend a training course for you.
Case study - Angela’s Story
“I had worked in retail for over 17 years and decided I wanted to try a new career in the care sector. After GSERA talked through the options I had available and the skills required, I started a Care Course at GSERA that covered practical topics and helped to make me feel more confident.
What I liked about the course was that it was more than just training. They help and encourage you to get the job you want with practical advice on interviews and application forms.
There were also employers in the Gorbals that let me come in to their company to see how things worked. Each company was different – personal care services, homelessness and physical disabilities – and it let me decide which part of the care sector I would like to work in, which was brilliant!
I went on a placement as a Support Assistant for one of them as part of my training and realised that was my ideal job. Straight after the training I was offered a full time job with them and have been there ever since.
Without GSERA I might have gone back to retail work – a road I really didn’t want to go back down. I now have a career I enjoy, that I am qualified for and feel very positive about my future”.

Case study – John’s Story
“As a 54 year old taxi operator, I retired through ill health. I thought I was too old to learn new skills. Like a lot off my generation I didn’t learn about computers at school and didn’t have the confidence to do anything about it. Thanks to the help and encouragement from the staff at the Learning Base I now have an ECDL Certificate.”
“I knew the basics of computing but after only a couple of sessions in the base, I was amazed how quickly I had learned new skills.”
