GSERA shows its support to local charity
On Friday 29th September Candy Munro Chief Executive (The Initiative) and Bill Hay from GSERA were delighted to present a cheque for £4,500 to staff of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice at Carlton Place.
The money was raised with help from local companies who once again attended the annual Gorbals Golf Open in late June. The event, which was held at Ralston Golf Club raised in total in excess of £9,000 for charities and community groups within the greater Gorbals area.
Hospice Corporate Fundraiser Jo Parker-Morgan said:
"Events like the Gorbals Initiative Golf day provide invaluable support to the Hospice, without which we would not be able to provide care and support to patients and their families. Our thanks go to all those who organised and attended the event and we are very much looking forward to next year."
Bill Hay and his team at GSERA have started organising next years event already, provisionally planned for late May next year.
If you are interested in helping raise even more money for charity please contact Bill Hay on 0141 420 3573 ext 203 or email bill.hay@gsera.org.uk
New Office Opening
GSERA opened our new office in East Pollokshields on 20th July 2006. In the first fortnight there were 21 registrations from local residents who are all well on the road to employment and training.
Our office is a much needed resource in the area which has high levels of unemployment and incapacity benefit and has been welcomed so far. GSERA East Pollokshields office has expanded our reach throughout the Southside allowing us to assist the wider community.
We'll be having an event to mark the official launch in September - watch this space …
Our offices are at 419 Shields Road - Tel: 0141 429 3243
Candy Munro – Chief Executive (former The Initiative) said:
"We are delighted to be moving into the East Pollokshields area to build on the work we have done in the Gorbals, Govanhill and Toryglen. To date we have supported over 6,200 Southsiders into jobs, training and volunteering. We are pleased to be involved in the East Pollokshields community and look forward to working with the partners in the area."
Gorbals Fair
The Gorbals Fair took place on Saturday 17th June.
As ever, GSERA played a part on the day…
We took part in the parade dressed as The Simpsons, sponsored the horse and dray and put on an ‘ice cream factory’ for the kids. We also set up the laptop and digital camera and used the ‘liquifier’ to take people’s pictures and project them onto the big screen. All activities went down well and a good day was had by all.
See you next year!
Investing in Ideas Launched
The Big Lottery’s latest venture Investing in Ideas was launched on Tuesday 31st January in the Adelphi Centre.
Chief Executive, Candy Munro hosted the event.
Over the next three years £4.6m is being made available for Investing in Ideas as part of the Big Lottery Fund's new funding framework for 2006-2009.
Investing in Ideas delivers grants between £500 and £10,000 to develop ideas. Funding - for projects which make a lasting change - could cover market research, feasibility studies, technical advice and guidance, consultation, training and development.
Projects for Investing in Ideas must fit within one of The Big Lottery’s four new areas of investment; growing community assets, 21st century life, life transitions and dynamic inclusive communities so there is a lot of scope for the Community Partnership Team to secure funding for various new projects throughout the Gorbals, Govanhill and Toryglen.
Big Lottery Fund Scotland's Dharmendra Kanani said: "The Big Lottery Fund wants to ensure that our funding provides lasting social change in communities across Scotland. We believe that this can only be achieved by having a longer term relationship with the organisations who come to us for funding and this means providing development support at an early stage."
Gorbals Annual Golf Open
On the 30th of June 2005 the Initiative hosted the 3rd Gorbals Golf Open.
The Open is designed as a fund raising event to raise as much money as possible for local Gorbals groups and deserving charities. This year it was decided that the money would be equally spilt between the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice and local Gorbals community groups who are most in need.
The night in total raised in excess of £6,000 – an increase on previous years amounts. This was a real success for the Initiative and is a trend we intend to continue for next year.
Showing their support on the day for the worthy causes were employers Wylies Europe, Bullet Express, Allied Distillers, CTD Tiles, Ashwood Scotland, Hypostyle Architects, Arthur Colquhoun, Neilson Binnie McKenzie, Cosmo Ceramics, Wylie and Bisset, Vanguard Group, REED in Partnership, Straightline Publishing and R.L. Engineering. A big thanks to all participants.
Bett in Partnership sponsored the entire event. As well as being a great fundraising event it was a chance for these local business to network with each other. There were prizes and donations made from most of the companies playing on the day so it was a real collective approach all in aid of a good cause.
A good day was had by all and, give or take the odd rain shower, the weather was all in all not too bad. The Local News were there too and photographed the winners on the day.
Since the Gorbals Golf Open has come to be we have raised over £15,000 for local charities.
